Bar Harbor Region

My family and I live on the beautiful island of Mount Desert, located on the rock bound coast of Maine. Mt. Desert Island is accessible by causeway and is a scenic destination for many visitors to Maine. Our Pottery Studio and Gallery border Acadia National Park, which encompasses 35,000 acres of seacoast, islands, forest, lakes and mountains. It is the only National Park located in the New England region. Acadia was established to protect the area's spectacular beaches, forests, coastal and offshore islands, native plant and animal life and natural history.

There are over 120 miles of trails throughout the Park. They vary from short coastal walks to steep mountain trails. Connecting trails enable hardy hikers to scale several Acadia peaks in one trip. Fifty-four miles of carriage roads weave around and through the Park's mountains and valleys. These smooth, graveled paths encircle Jordan Pond and Eagle Lake as well as Sargent and Penobscot Mountains.

Villages near the park display a broad range of island lifestyles. Northeast Harbor shelters an extensive sailing fleet, as well as a distinctive summer colony. Bar Harbor offers accommodations and many points of interest. Numerous small fishing communities retain the traditions of the Maine coastal village with lobstering, fishing, and boat-building all playing an active part of daily life.

Activities on Mount Desert Island include boating, biking, camping, canoeing, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, photography, crosscountry skiing, snowshoeing, swimming, and wildlife observation.
