In the spring of 1966, the father
of my best friend invited me to sit at his potter's
wheel. On that day I fell in love with clay
and the potter's life.
Following my art school training
and a short pottery apprenticeship in Denmark,
I established my studio in 1971. For over twenty
years I made pots, went to trade shows and sold
my work through galleries in the U.S. and Japan.
I discovered the life of a production potter
was often overwhelmed with pressure to supply
the demands of the craft marketplace.
We moved to Bar Harbor in 1992,
where I focused my time on building our new
house and studio. After this creative and head-clearing
break, I returned to clay work with renewed
determination to please my hand and eye and
follow my own heart and intuition.
I now devote one third of my time to making
the pots and two thirds to surface decoration
and image development. I integrate images from
nature to create graphic patterns. Each and
every piece is unique.
In 2001, I added a new gallery to my studio
workshop to showcase my most recent work. The
gallery also features the oil pastel paintings
and colored clay jewelry of my wife, Carol
Shutt.
